When designing our sessions, we aim to use the 5 Pathways to Nature Connection, which inform and guide our approach. These pathways are ways in which individuals can relate to, engage with and simply be in nature. Studied and formulated by researches at the University of Derby, these steps help in creating a strong and long-lasting bond with the natural world. We aim to embed these in all of our sessions, so people can feel connected with nature around them beyond the time spent at our workshops.
In the world that feels so disconnected, nature remains a constant source of wonder, joy, and inspiration and it is our purpose to aid others in discovering the beauty of nature and what incredible things it can do to us.
So what are the five pathways that guide our approach?
Senses – when we use all of our senses to explore and experience the natural world, we are able to notice more beauty that the nature holds. By smelling flowers, touching soft moss, listening to the song of birds, tasting freshly picked food and noticing small details on the leaves, we are immersing ourselves in nature and experiencing it on a deeper level.
Emotions – being in nature offers a plethora of moments that can inspire awe, wonder, inspiration that make us feel better about ourselves and the world around us. Finding joy in watching wildlife or noticing emotions that come with being outside, can instil stronger connection with the natural environment.
Beauty – noticing, capturing, appreciating nature’s beauty is another pathway to nature connection that we explore in our sessions.
Meaning – how we talk about and express our relationship with nature creates another pathway that help us create bond with the outside world. Our folklore, celebrations that mark the changing seasons, small rituals that we create to honour nature, are all ways in which we explore what nature means to us.
Compassion – looking after wildlife, thinking about how our actions impact the environment, creating nature-friendly gardens, are all expressions of compassion towards nature and help in creating a more profound relationship with the natural world.
